Enabling independence of Samuel while maintaining support with Beanbag Care

Overview

Samuel, an 88–year–old gentleman, lives independently. He has two daughters, one living 20 minutes away and the other 45 minutes away. They consistently support their father and often enjoy their lunch together most Sundays.

Recently, Samuel’s health began to deteriorate, and after a thorough medical examination, he was diagnosed with mixed dementia. Despite this diagnosis, Samuel continues to live his life to the fullest. He maintains his physical fitness by attending a local walking group, visiting the gym and accessing betting shops via bus. Samuel also wears a hearing aid to improve his weakened hearing due to age.

As his cognition started declining, Samuel and his daughters were introduced to Beanbag Care to monitor his well-being. His family did not want a solution that interfered with his independence so they were eager to try our unobtrusive, technology-enabled solution.

Additionally, his kids also arranged for carers to assist Samuel with his medication intake from Monday to Saturday. They visit him for 15 minutes each morning and evening, ensuring his medication is complete.

Solution

One of the primary reasons for installing the Beanbag Care system was the family’s concern for Samuel’s safety and well-being, as he spends most of his time alone at home. The system provided a much-needed safety net to Samuel and also provided peace of mind to his family.

Since installing the system, his daughters, who serve as his emergency responders, feel more at peace. The Beanbag Care system has proved to be very helpful in supporting their father to live independently. His daughters can now easily track their father’s daily activities with an easy-to-use responder app without intruding on his privacy. They use the information provided by the system on sleep analysis, temperature and carbon monoxide level monitoring, and quality care to check on their father and take proactive measures.

Daily sleep updates for Samuel’s daughters: The system provides Samuel’s daughters with insights into his sleep patterns, including when he goes to bed, wakes up and any disturbances during the night. If Samuel does not wake up at his usual time in the morning, his daughters receive notifications, allowing them to check and remind him of his daily activities.

Ensuring Samuel’s routine: Discreet sensors strategically placed around the house and at the entrance constantly monitor his movements. They can now know when their father leaves the house for daily sessions.

Temperature alerts for Samuel’s well-being:Owing to his dementia, Samuel once turned off his home’s heating, unaware of the impact on his health. His daughters received a temperature alert on the responder app. They were able to promptly call and help him turn the heat back on, preventing a potential hazard.

Outcome

The Beanbag system has proven invaluable to Samuel, allowing him to live independently and to get support from his daughters promptly.

His family describes the system as a ‘comfort blanket’. For the first time in a long while, one of his daughters had a weekend away, knowing the system would monitor her father 24/7.

His daughters recommend the system to others. Thankfully, there has not been an emergency yet; they are confident that the system will support Samuel by alerting his daughters if any emergency occurs.
