Enhancing elderly care: Carol’s transition to assisted living solutions

Overview

Carol is an 80-years-old elderly woman living independently in a two-bedroom flat with a beautiful view of the cricket ground. Her home is part of a community with shared spaces, allowing her to enjoy morning coffee with her neighbours, ensuring she never feels alone or bored. She has a daughter, Mia, who lives about a 40-minute drive away. Mia makes it a priority to visit twice a week, bringing her three children along. She works as a part-time nurse and spends most of her time taking care of the children.

Recently, Carol’s cognitive health seemed to be declining, leading to increasing forgetfulness. After further investigation, it was discovered that this forgetfulness was a result of mixed dementia.

Although Carol enjoys living independently, her condition is making it difficult for her to live alone. While Carol still manages to dress herself in the morning, she often forgets to eat and take her medications on time. Many times, she has even been stopped at Tesco for forgetting to pay the bill, requiring her daughter to come and assist her.

Solution

Worried about her mother’s safety and well-being, Mia decided to install the Beanbag Care assisted living solution to monitor Carol’s health.

Sleep monitoring for better health: Before the installation, Mia, Carol’s primary responder, assumed her mother got out of bed between 8 to 9 am. The same information was fed into the system. However, upon analysis, the responder app revealed Carol’s actual sleep pattern, showing she slept more than 10 hours daily and woke up between 9:45 and 10 am.

The system’s adaptable nature allowed Mia to update her mother’s wake-up time using the app. Now, if Carol doesn’t get up within an hour of her set wake-up time, the system sends a notification to Mia, allowing her to check on her mother. This showcases Beanbag Care’s flexibility in adapting to individual needs.

Addressing sedantry behaviour through 24/7 monitoring: Thanks to 24/7 monitoring, another significant concern came to Mia’s notice. She found that Carol spent most of the day sitting on the sofa without moving or engaging in any routine activity, which could have severe health implications. Armed with this insight, Mia can now call her mother and encourage her to move around the house for better blood circulation and reducing other health risks.

Outcome

The Beanbag Care system has been instrumental in supporting Carol since the beginning. It has also empowered her daughter to take proactive steps in ensuring her mother’s well-being. Now, Mia can monitor her mother’s activities remotely and ensure her safety.

While Mia still has to remind her mother to eat, take her medication, and clean herself, she feels reassured, knowing that the system will notify her in case of any major emergencies.
